Get in Shape on the Water
Ride the waves
If you’re tired of pounding the treadmill, or the thought of sweating it out at another Bikram yoga class sends you to sleep, why not try taking up a new hobby? Make the most of the amazing seaside living that Dubai offers by trying out Fairmont The Palm’s new range of watersports activities – the most fun way to get in shape that we’ve tried yet. Plus, you can top up your tan at the same time! Run by instructor to the stars Rhett Bodes, you know you’re in good hands as he’s taken everyone out on the water, from Leonardo DiCaprio to Michael Jackson, since he originally set up shop at the One&Only back in 1999. Health and Beauty Ed Naomi tried out a few of the activities on offer…
“Having unsuccessfully tried wakeboarding a couple of times before, Rhett took us out on a surfboard training lesson – something I’d never heard of but was definitely interested to try. It’s basically wakeboarding on a full-size surfboard, so you’re far away from the boat, but not strapped in. Different to other schools around the city, Rhett actually boarded next to me at the same time, which was a massive help, as he can see your technique from close up and give you advice. I got up first time, and even got some twists and turns in thanks to his expert guidance – it was the most fun I’ve had on the water so far!”
Once you’ve mastered that, it’s time to get on the wakeboard. One of the city’s most high-octane watersports, it involves strapping both feet into a single board while you’re pulled along, with the city’s gorgeous skyline in the background. Stand-up Paddleboarding (SUP)
While you can paddleboard at a number of venues in the city, the Fairmont is definitely one of the cheaper options for a luxury hotel. A more relaxed exercise, you simply maintain an upright stance on the board while giving your arms and back and core a great workout with the paddle. While you can’t venture too far out, the amazing view of the Dubai skyline makes for some great Instagram-worthy shots.  INFO: From Dhs55 for 30 minutes
What else is on offer?
Banana boat rides
Speedboat rides
Pedal boat
Catamaran and sailing lessons
