Amp Up Your Exercise
Strength and Conditioning
WHERE? TK MMA Fitness, Al Shatha Tower, Dubai Media City, 050 283 1544,
WHEN? 7.30pm, Sun-Thu and 6.30pm, Fri
HOW MUCH? Trial session free, Dhs100 each, Dhs495 for the month
WHAT? Our favourite 360-degree class, Strength and Conditioning focuses on everything from weight loss and endurance to full-body toning. Franky, who coaches the class, has 20 years’ training experience and is a former British commando physical training instructor, so he really knows his stuff. After a gentle warm up, the hard work really begins. Classes are split into a circuit of three different exercises with cardio in between sets, comprising everything from dead lifts, box jumps, kettlebell swings, pull-ups and more, making use of TK MMA Fitness’ extensive array of outdoor workout equipment. The 60-minute class ends with a team competition (and a selfie, too) – think tyre flips and sledge pushes – there’s a great spirit to every class. Ahlan! highly recommends, and health editor Naomi is addicted!
1SIX8 Burn
WHERE? The Warehouse Gym, Umm Suqueim Road, 04 323 2323,
WHEN? See website for schedule
HOW MUCH? Dhs100 per session, free with GuavaPass
WHAT? Dubbed one of the hottest new workouts on the planet, Burn has finally made its way to Dubai and promises to get you in tip-top shape in no time! Held by 1SX8, a new boutique training studio, the session is a high-intensity interval training workout that combines cardio (there’s work on the treadmill and rowing machine) as well as strength and endurance-based exercises on the TRX gear and with dumbbells. You go through each exercise in bursts of 75 seconds with a minute’s rest in between, over a period of 45 minutes. It’s tough (the treadmill part will kill you!), but it’s a great workout and proven to burn calories, fast. The best bit? You’ll keep on burning them the next day, too!
WHERE? Pilates Academy, Jumeirah Bay X2, Cluster X, JLT, 056 798 4655,
WHEN? See website for schedule
HOW MUCH? Dhs100 per class, discount on bulk bookings, free with GuavaPass
WHAT? Hailing from New York, the Pilates Academy International brings together international teachers and techniques. Its newest class, Cardiolates, does exactly what it says on the tin – you get the best of both worlds with the weight loss advantages of cardio and the core strengthening of Pilates. It starts with a small warm up before you hit the floor for a short Pilates class. Next it’s onto the mini trampolines, where the group bounces together for 30 minutes, stretching and toning in between. Bouncing has been proven to be 68 per cent more effective than jogging, and we know it’s much more fun, so what do you have to lose? Exactly.
MMA Yoga
WHERE? Piloga Studio, Bay Square, Business Bay, 04 456 4499,
WHEN? 7.30pm, Tue and
9.15am, Wed
HOW MUCH? Dhs80 for a single class, Dhs800 for one month unlimited classes, free with GuavaPass
WHAT? While MMA and yoga couldn’t be more different, they make for one great workout when teamed together. Combining yoga with all the principles a fighter needs – think balance, focus and a whole lot of kicking – the class keeps the heart pumping with arm strengthening drills, leg kicks and shoulder and hip exercises. There’s a gentle warm-up followed by sun salutations, jump lunges and squats, before moving into kicks, warrior poses with side lunges, planks, balancing challenges and so much more! Sounds exhausting? Well working out to Eye of the Tiger will always keep you in the mood!
Cardio Kickboxing Bootcamp
WHERE? Palm Park, Palm Jumeirah, 050 495 4446
WHEN? 7pm, Sun and 6.30am, Tue
HOW MUCH? Dhs100 for a single class, Dhs800 for a package of 10
WHAT? If you want to learn the tricks of the MMA trade in a more exclusive environment, you need to check out pro-fighter Rafat Shawe’s new bootcamp. Taking place outside in the lush surroundings of the Palm, the former international karate gold medallist blends boxing, martial arts and cardio kickboxing for a full body workout that burns up to 600 calories. Classes are small, so you get some quality one-on-one time, and they are great for beginners, too. Perfect when you need to release some stress!
Iyengar Yoga
WHERE? 136.1 Yoga, Dubai Marina, 04 441 6287,
WHEN? See website for schedule
HOW MUCH? Dhs85, free with GuavaPass
WHAT? A lesser-known yet super-effective form of yoga for those with back pain, this is  all about alignment, and founder B.K.S Iyengar is largely considered one of the world’s greatest living yoga teachers. With the help of props, such as blocks and straps, it focuses heavily on the legs with a lot of standing and balancing poses spread through the sequence. There’s plenty of interaction, too, so if you’re doing it wrong, instructor Ganesh will get you into the perfect position in no time.
SUP Girls
WHERE? Riva Beach Club, Palm Jumeirah, 04 456 2482
WHEN? 9am, Fri and 6.30am, Sun and Tue
HOW MUCH?  Dhs120 per session or Dhs550 for a class of five
WHAT? Not your typical exercise class, SUP Girls is ideal for those who want to make the most of seaside living. A 60-minute class that takes place out at sea on a paddleboard, as well as a short portion on the beach, it requires pretty good balance, but it’s not impossible. Starting with simple stretches out at sea, a series of squats and push-ups follows before heading back to shore. There you’ll get your cardio on with burpees and sit-ups, then it’s back on the board for lunges and a few more balancing exercises. It’s a hard workout, but a fun class for those looking to try something new.
Hills, Hills, Hills
WHERE? Bespoke Ride, Al Quoz, 04 348 4288,
WHEN? 1pm, Mon and 6pm, Wed
HOW MUCH? Dhs120 per session, free with GuavaPass
WHAT? Taking place at Dubai’s dedicated indoor cycling studio, Hills, Hills, Hills is an untraditional take on spinning and is perfect for those who want to take their workout to the next level. The name is pretty self-explanatory, and the 60-minute studio bike class takes you through the ‘best hills in Dubai’ with a variety of exercises that focus on building your power. It’s all about using your true body weight on a gradient, with the motto ‘if you’re not climbing, you’re not really training’. Prepare yourself for a massive dose of jelly legs the next day!
